Wow, what a massive performance difference leaping ahead two technological generations can make. If Nvidia had released the GeForce GTX 1070 (starting at $380 MSRP, $450 reviewed) just last week it would’ve been the most powerful single-GPU graphics card to ever grace the earth, edging out the awe-inspiring—and $1,000—. In the wake of the launch of the (starting at $600 MSRP on ), however, Nvidia’s new card can't lay claim to the performance crown. Still, that fact doesn't diminish this card’s stunning achievement. The GeForce GTX 1070 offers Titan-level, no-compromises graphics oomph for a mere $380. The GTX 1080 may be the new king of graphics cards, but this powerful new prince’s blend of price and performance will no doubt make it the people’s champion—though it’s not quite the steal that the GTX 970 was. Filling a void for a true professional video card on the Mac platform, NVIDIA on Monday announced plans to begin shipping its Quadro FX 4800 ultra-high-end solution for the Mac Pro next month. With advances in GPU architecture and computing environments, the NVIDIA Quadro FX 4800 featuring 192 CUDA parallel processing cores, provides professionals with visual computing from their desktops delivering results that push the realms of visualization.

The GeForce GTX 1070 under the hood The GeForce GTX 1070’s power stems from the same source as the GTX 1080’s: Nvidia’s Pascal GPU. Graphics cards from both Nvidia and AMD have been stuck on the same underlying 28nm technology for four long years, but Pascal—and forthcoming Radeon cards based on —finally break the appalling trend, leaping forward two full process generations, shrinking down to 16nm transistors and integrating 3D “FinFET” technology as well. For all the nitty-gritty details, check out the of our GTX 1080 review, but in a nutshell, Pascal GPUs represent a huge step forward in performance and power efficiency.
The GTX 1070 features the same “GP104” Pascal GPU as the bigger, badder brother, but with five of its 20 Streaming Multiprocessor units disabled. That leaves it with 1,920 CUDA cores and 120 texture processing units, but Nvidia left the GPU’s full complement of 64 render output units (ROPs) intact. The GTX 1070’s clock speeds have also been nerfed a bit, down to a 1,506MHz base clock and 1,683MHz boost clock, but that’s still far superior to the previous-generation graphics cards—the GTX 980 topped out at 1,216MHz boost clocks, while AMD’s Radeon R9 390X topped out at 1,050MHz. Another subtle, but key difference from the GTX 1080 is the GTX 1070’s memory. While the GTX 1080 adopted cutting-edge GDDR5X memory clocked at a blistering 10Gbps, the GTX 1070 employs 8GB of traditional GDDR5 RAM over a 256-bit bus instead, clocked at 8Gbps for an effective memory bandwidth of 256GBps. How the GTX 1080’s delta color memory compression reduces memory bandwidth demands. Don’t be disappointed by the lack of GDDR5X or the high-bandwith memory found in AMD’s Radeon Fury cards, though: The GTX 1070’s 8GB of memory is more than enough for today’s games, even at 4K resolution, and the Pascal GPU’s new lossless delta color compression tricks (which again, we covered in the GTX 1080 write-up) makes it even more effective. From the outside, the GeForce GTX 1070 Founders Edition mirrors the GTX 1080 Founders Edition, with an aggressive, polygon-inspired aluminum shroud, “GEFORCE” spelled out in illuminated green letters on the edge, a blower-style fan that exhausts hot air through the I/O plate on the rear of your system, and a low-profile backplate with a removable portion to improve airflow when you’re running a multi-GPU SLI setup. You’ll also find the same single HDMI 2.0b connection, a single, and three full-sized DisplayPorts that are DP 1.2 certified, but ready for DP 1.3 and 1.4. That last tidbit means the card will be able to power 4K monitors running at 120Hz, 5K displays at 60Hz, and even 8K displays at 60Hz—though you’ll need a pair of cables for that last scenario. There are some key differences between the two graphics cards, though. Rather than using advanced vapor chamber cooling, the GTX 1070 dissipates heat using a trio of copper heatpipes embedded in an aluminum heatsink. And while the card sports the same 8-pin power connector as the GTX 1080, the GTX 1070 sips only 150W of power, rather than 180W. But the truly astonishing thing about that number is how much more performance the GTX 1070 is able to eke out of the comparatively meager power draw; the similarly performing Titan X sucks 250W through 6-pin and 8-pin connectors, while the 275W Fury X uses a pair of 8-pin connectors.

I want to 'test the waters' so to say with mining cryptocurrency. Before I jump in and do the research I'd like to know If I'm only wasting my time before I start. I want to mine with my Gaming rig while I am sleeping/working. As for electricity and making profit, my electricity is free so even if I made 1 BTC in 5 years, it would be profit. So, is mining a 24/7 thing that is best left with a dedicated rig, or is it okay to have it mining only during those specified times. Just seeing if mining is something I will stay interested in before I go off and buy something I will regret. It definitely makes sense.
You already have the hardware. The only downside is setup and monitoring time, extra fan noise, and more wear on your GPU/computer system. One warning, you'll soon realize that you could simply buy and add another GPU to your current computer and dedicate it to mine for even more reward. It probably wouldn't take too long to pay off the extra GPU, then you could add even more mining hardware. Here's my old command line for Cudaminer: cudaminer -i 0 -a scrypt -o Stratum+tcp://ltc.give-me-coins.com:3333 -u username -p password -i 0 is for GFX cards running monitors -a scrypt is well.
For scrypt based mining.o is where you put the pool's address, in my case it is ltc.give-me-coins.com on port 3333. Stratum+tcp:// is for Stratum based servers for reduced network latency. You can use flags like -l F32x4 which forces the use of Fermi architecture.
32x4 impacts GFX memory usage and performance. It is best to not use the -l flags, as Cudaminer's built in 'auto-tune' auto selects the best memory/performance flag for you. Just add -i 0 to your.bat file and cudaminer will auto-configure itself for the best hashrate. A Treatise on CUDAMiner Thanks CBuchner for creating Cudaminer! The basic format for CUDA Miner's.bat file will be. Stratum (For HTTP: Replace stratum+tcp with http): Ex: cudaminer -H 0 -i 1 -l auto -C 2 -o stratum+tcp://xyz.yourpool.com orthere -u username.worker -p password What each flag does: -H scrypt also has a small SHA256 component to it: 0 hashes this single threaded on the CPU.
1 to enable multithreaded hashing on the CPU. 2 offloads everything to the GPU (default) -i list of flags (0 or 1) to enable interactive desktop performance on individual cards. Use this to remove lag at the cost of some hashing performance. Do not use large launch configs for devices that shall run in interactive mode - it's best to use autotune! This setting set at 0 will cause your GPU to run at 100% and most likely will cause lag while even tabbing through your browser!
Set at 1 if you're trying to use your PC while mining.l specify the kernel launch configuration per device. This replaces autotune or heuristic selection. You can pass the strings 'auto' or just a kernel prefix like L or F or K or T to autotune for a specific card generation or a kernel prefix plus a lauch configuration like F28x8 if you know what kernel runs best (from a previous autotune).C list of flags (0 or 1 or 2) to enable use of the texture cache for reading from the scrypt scratchpad.
